“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication,” Leonardo da Vinci

April 15th is a significant date. It matters not if the letters I, R, or S are present in your email address, to do list or worry box. For April 15th marks the birthday of a true thought leader. A moment or two spent considering his accomplishments and contributions to our collective knowledge base may help us to become better thinkers ourselves.

Leonardo da Vinci would be something on the order of DLXIII years old on the 15th day of this year’s fourth month. To put things into perspective, there was of course no internet nor Google, no television nor radio, and the printing press was celebrating just its tenth birthday. The United Nations estimates the total earth’s population was 500 million then, or roughly that of present day North America. Leonardo had already drawn the iconic Vitruvian Man by the time America was even ‘discovered’. Yet his achievements dwarf those of any today in spite of the latest technological and scientific advancements.[Continue Reading]

Top 5 Ways to Get Business Users Excited about SAP® Data Archiving

ManWoman250x150

ManWoman250x150

Data archiving is an essential part of any data volume management strategy. It reduces the amount of data in online systems, driving faster system performance and lowering system costs. However, it can be difficult to convince business users of the importance of data archiving if they are worried they won’t be able to access the data when they need it.

To get business users support for data archiving, it is important to address their concerns about data retrieval after archiving.

Credit Card Data Still Too Vulnerable – Almost 90% of Organizations Don’t Meet PCI Data Security Standards

An article today in Computer Weekly, “PCI DSS compliance still too low”, had me thinking of several recent high profile cases of customer data and credit card breaches.  Whenever there is a customer data breach, it is BIG news. Maybe you know someone who was personally impacted by one of the recent credit card breaches .

According to to the latest report on Data Security from Verizon., almost 90% of organizations surveyed don’t comply fully with the Payment Card Information (PCI) Data Security Standard (DSS). While that number is shockingly high, it is not entirely a surprise. Protecting customer data is hard.[Continue Reading]

Big Data in 2014

We’re one month into 2014, and many enterprises we work with are now moving full speed ahead to shift their Big Data projects for this year from the planning and proposal stage to actual execution. For the past few years, Big Data has generated an increasing amount of discussion in board rooms, blogs and the IT press. Rightfully so, too. Big Data holds the promise to unlock valuable new insights that can help drive customer sales and grow the bottom line.[Continue Reading]

Data Archiving in SAP CRM? Absolutely!

Archiving data from SAP environments has become standard operating procedure at a large percentage of companies today. Usually, however, the systems that become candidates for data archiving are typically SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and SAP Business Warehouse (BW). Few think beyond that to SAP systems such as Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) and Financial Supply Chain Management (FSCM).[Continue Reading]

Compliance Benefits of a Controlled Methodology for Decommissioning Legacy SAP Systems

Many companies have older legacy systems still operational for audit compliance, review and reporting purposes. We know that as data ages it becomes less valuable and this is especially true for legacy data. However, businesses need to retain data until it reaches its end-of-life, because of legal holds, in support of governance/audit requirements or for maintenance histories.  [Continue Reading]

Spotlight on Oil & Gas Industry: Managing SAP Data and Processes to Maximize Business Efficiency

Harnessing the power of Big Data is an overwhelming challenge for even the most disciplined enterprise. However, the task grows more complicated in highly regulated industries such as Oil and Gas / Energy Services, where incredibly large volumes of data are simultaneously being created, shared and processed from locations across the globe. System performance is paramount, and it’s critical that all data be available and accessible when needed, or the process can break down.[Continue Reading]

Need improved SAP business performance? CIOs can benefit by starting with core systems.

Need improved SAP business performance? CIOs can benefit by starting with core systems.

Think it is easy being a CIO these days? Perhaps more than any CXO role, the chief information officer is coping with significant ‘new’ business challenges. Rapidly evolving technologies, an increasingly mobile workforce and pressure from internal groups to launch their own applications are just a few of the drivers jeopardizing overall business performance. Throw the push to operate at the “speed of now” and the expectations for Big Data into the mix, and it is no wonder that the CIO’s head is spinning.[Continue Reading]

Cut SAP® Application Costs – Even those that can’t be seen

Sometimes we do things for one reason and not only get the desired results, but acquire additional results somewhere else as well. An example is converting paper documents to an electronic format in support of green initiatives. Paper is indeed reduced; but, making documents electronic also aids in minimizing lost items, enabling automated work flows, and generally completing the process faster.[Continue Reading]

The Business Case for Data Archiving

CaseForDataArchiving

Is a picture really worth a thousand words? I just Googled ‘What is an Infographic?’ I immediately received a very long list of hits. One of the first ones—and my personal favorite—is the Infographic that explains what an Infographic is. Pretty cool.

And this brings me to the topic of Data Archiving. A stretch? Maybe not if you look at data as a ‘picture’ as does the Infographic referenced above. In ERP systems there are great volumes of data that need to be tamed so that it can be sorted, arranged and presented. But in ERP systems, the data is more complicated and how to manage it can get dicey depending on the stakeholders involved and their requirements. For corporate databases, growth must be kept in check or it becomes unmanageable. And, for those using the data, it must be available instantly whenever and wherever it is needed.

So it begs the question: Why not archive it? After all, archiving saves money on a variety of levels! Isn’t that what the boss wants? Ahh. You have to build a Business Case for Data Archiving? Enough said. Let’s go back to the picture concept. Check out the infographic below and let me know if this helps. The nexus of technologies is here. Do you have the funds to implement them?

Virtually every technology report and blog discussing trends for 2013 proclaimed that the “nexus” of Big Data, Social, Mobile and Cloud is finally upon us. If you’re like me, I had to consult Webster’s to get an understanding of the word nexus. It means a connected series or group. According to Gartner’s October 2012 predictions and SAP’s Sanjay Poonen, the tightly connected and highly complementary group of technologies and trends will drive information technology (IT) spending through the next five years.[Continue Reading]

Does cloud storage fit into smart SAP archiving strategies?

The SAP world is all abuzz about cloud computing these days, and for good reason. During last fall’s TechEd conference, SAP announced a number of tools to help companies run SAP solutions on private cloud architectures. But amid all the buzz, there hasn’t been much talk on one aspect of cloud computing highly relevant for any user of SAP solutions: incorporating cloud storage into SAP data archiving strategies. Except by Dolphin.

Can you continue to ignore data security?

As big data exponentially increases the amount of information organizations access, store and archive, the imperative to manage it securely gains attention and urgency. To protect privacy, federal, state and international governments have established a plethora of new regulations mandating the security of personally identifiable information including payment card data, human resources documents, medical, and other financial information. Industry analysts expect many corporations will need to meet the new data encryption obligations fast, or face significant fines for non-compliance. [Continue Reading]

Big Data, Data Growth—Too much of a good thing

Too much of a good thing typically hurts. Gorging on a second serving of pumpkin pie; guzzling a third hot toddy at the office holiday party; doing dozens of sit-ups as penance for it all.

Data is no different despite its obvious value to your business. Most major corporations today rely on real-time information to operate effectively, but the data being collected—Big Data—is growing faster than many companies can manage it. [Continue Reading]

Big Data: Realize significant benefits now while building a bridge to SAP HANA

According to industry analysts we have entered the age of “Big Data”. On one hand, Big Data relates to the fact that today’s business intelligence (BI) systems—like SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse (SAP NetWeaver BW)—are experiencing record levels of data growth from terabytes to petabytes and beyond. Conversely, tools such as SAP HANA are becoming available to transform this mounting data into a powerful asset. The real challenge of Big Data is figuring out how to maximize the opportunity for never before realized real-time business intelligence while minimizing the impact of exploding data volume on productivity and total cost of ownership (TCO).[Continue Reading]

The top three myths about SAP Data Archiving

Data archiving is an event—Wrong. Data archiving is a process, not a project. Many companies archive their critical business data on an arbitrary schedule—whenever someone thinks of it, once a year, or even just once. But proper data archiving is a constant, ongoing process. Effective data volume management requires consistency, especially considering the pace at which contemporary corporations generate new transactional data. Whether an hourly, daily or weekly archiving schedule is appropriate for your business needs, archiving is an ongoing process and should never be considered a special occurrence.[Continue Reading]

Why is legacy decommissioning so important?

Simply put, Legacy Decommissioning improves efficiency and lowers total cost of ownership of an IT infrastructure. Conversely, keeping legacy systems alive translates to high costs for IT in terms of maintenance for hardware and software. Plus, it requires skillsets to keep operational and the access and retrieval of information is usually inefficient. There are ways to retain historical data and documents and even access them from your system of record like your ERP. Like to hear about your experience in handling legacy systems. www.dolphin-corp.com/information-lifecycle-management/legacy-decommissioning/

Are you Ready for an Audit?

When the IRS or other tax and regulatory agencies call, are you ready? There was a time in the SAP world that being “audit ready” meant implementing SAP DART before archiving. But for many companies, being audit data ready means having a process in place to enable them to respond at a moment’s notice to requirements and information requests from a dizzying array of tax authorities and regulatory regimes. It is an issue that impacts the bottom line: a multi-national company might expect to pay millions in penalties, simply because of their inability to report in a timely manner.[Continue Reading]

SAP Business Warehouse Accelerator (BWA): Are the benefits worth the cost?

In a searchSAP.com story, editor Courtney Bjorlin reports that many users are upset about the cost of improving SAP NetWeaver BW performance with its BW Accelerator. In the article, Dolphin’s CEO Werner Hopf offers insight into how to assess your own needs for speeding up queries, and into the need to make your choices in the context of your company’s information lifecycle management (ILM) strategy. Information Lifecycle Management – Defined

Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) is the practice of strategically managing the data within your organizationincluding determining where it is stored, how quickly it can be accessed, how it is tracked, and how long it must be retained. With a well-planned ILM initiative, companies can ensure that their SAP solutions live up to their promise of high compliance and high performance; ILM helps companies manage data retention and access requirements to protect their organization from risk.[Continue Reading]
